Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What are Wax Luminaries?
Wax luminaries are hollow candles which you place a votive candle (or LED light) inside. The light produced by the votive candle or LED will give the luminary a bright and beautiful glow.
  2. Won’t the flame from the votive candle melt the luminary since it’s made of wax?
No. As long as the votive candle or oil cartridge is placed directly in the center, it won’t melt the sides of the luminary. If you decide to use a votive candle, pour a small amount of water into the luminary until it is about ¼ of an inch high. This water will capture and harden any wax that spills or drips from the votive candle. This will also prevent any melted wax from sticking to the bottom of the luminary.

An oil cartridge/fuel cell can also be used inside the luminary without the need for pouring water into the bottom of the luminary. However, be sure that the oil cartridge is placed in the center of the luminary.
  3. Can you use a tea light?
We don’t recommend using a tea light because some tealights only burn for 3 or 4 hours. In addition, the metal container which holds the tealight candle will get very hot and melt a hold in the bottom of the wax luminary.
  4. Can you use a glass with a votive?
Yes, but we don’t recommend it. Just like the metal cup from a tealight, the votive glass can become hot and also melt a hole in the bottom of the luminary.
  5. How can I get the brightest glow?
Your best glow will come from a Candles West votive candle. We produce our votive candles with higher quality wax and larger wicks for a more robust flame. Click here to view details for our votive candles.

A bright glow can also be produced by using our oil cartridges (aka: fuel cells) inside the luminaries. This is the most convenient and hassle-free option since you don’t have to pour water into the luminaries. You just light the wick and place it inside the luminary. We have oil cartridges that can last 5 hours, 8 hours, 10 hours, and 20 hours. Click here to view details and pricing for our oil cartridges.

If your venue doesn’t allow for open flame candles, a more suitable option is to use our battery powered or rechargeable LED tealights. Although these don’t produce the same glow as the votive candle or oil cartridge, it is a safer and more cost effective option for restaurants, nightclubs, spas and hotels/resorts.
  6. Can you use the luminary as a vase?
Yes, the luminary will hold water (half the height of the luminary) so you can use it as a floral container. It is recommended to use a plastic insert to prevent leakage.

DO NOT put luminaries in the cooler, refrigerator, or freezer. A temperature of 50 degrees or colder will make the luminaries very fragile and they will crack when taken out of the cooler.
  7. Can you make a luminary in any color?
YES! We can make luminaries and candles in any color. We have 20 standard colors but we match any color from a Pantone book or you can send us a fabric swatch or any piece of material. Custom color matching is a small additional charge. The most popular color for luminaries is ivory or white. Luminaries in a darker color will not glow as brightly as an ivory colored luminary.
  8. How do you store them?
We recommend storing your luminaries is a closet at room temperature. Be sure the luminaries are empty and clean before storing. It is best to keep them in boxes to prevent dust accumulation or damage.
  9. Can the luminaries be used in the summer outside?
Yes, but please remember the luminaries are made of paraffin wax. Hotter climates and direct sunlight in areas such as Las Vegas and Arizona are too hot to allow for proper outdoor use. However, it is safe to use them outdoors in hotter climates after sunset. The wax luminaries will begin to soften and distort at 95 degrees.
  10. Will the darker colors illuminate?
No, the darker the color the less illumination you will get. Example black and brown won’t glow.
  11. Why should we order candles from your company?
Our current customers will all agree that our candles are superior to other brands. Candles West has been manufacturing candles for more than 10 years. We only use high-grade paraffin wax and high quality cotton wicks. All of our materials and produced and manufactured in the US. Our candles burn longer and brighter than the competition.
